Community Health Trust - Sierra Leone

CHT Youth Working Group

Katey has joined forces with 5 keen students at her school to raise awareness and educate her fellow students on all things CHT and Salone.

On the 18th July 2011 their school; The Wellington Academy have given over the whole school day for a Sierra Leone Day, where the working group will be creating activities and lessons for all 500 students to demonstrate what life is like in Sierra Leone, where development can really work, the pitfalls of rapid development, health and community issues in developing countries and to generally demonstrate the differences between the two cultures.

Katey realised that most of her fellow students weren't even aware where Sierra Leone was as they have grown up after the demise of the media coverage of the horrific civil war that plagued the country for 11 years, killing over 50,000 people and displacing huge numbers of the country's population which finally ended in 2002. This prompted her to try and raise awareness and relay her experiences in the country.

After much lobbying, local radio and press, Katey has achieved permission to run the day and the group is busy planning all the elements.
